Purpose

Finished drawings for a new house, c1770-76, unexecuted (4)

Notes

These drawings show two alternatives for the arrangement of the courtyard in front of the house. The ground plan and elevation of the house (Adam volumes 29/4 and 29/2) show an open courtyard containing a porte-cochère, but the principal storey plan and the section (Adam volumes 29/5 and 29/3) show no porte-cochère, and instead a colonnaded circular courtyard which connects directly with the front of the house, and is reminiscent of Roman bath house architecture. Moreover, the section (Adam volume 29/3) shows a house with one more storey than is seen in the elevation of the principal front (Adam volume 29/2). It appears, therefore, that the arrangement of the courtyard, and even the size of the house were all undecided prior to the abandonment of the scheme.

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
