as above, existing rooms (outlined in black wash) labelled: Common Parlor, Housekeeper, Butlers pantry, Court, Court Yard, Passage to the Kitchen; new rooms (largely outlined in pink wash) labelled Servants Hall, Kitchen, Cooks Closet / and / Pantry, Meal Room, Bakehouse, Scullery, dressing Wigs / Cleaning Knives / Shoes &c, Water / Closet (twice), Drying Ground, Larder, Brewhouse, Tree and dimensions given Verso: addressed to Willm Windham Esqr / Earsham / Bungay / Suffolk (sic), One Piece of Paper, (?) 10p, rubber stamped -- (illegible) 1A and note Mr Gubbin /Carp[ente]r / Thames St[reet] Letter: Sir, / I delayed sending this plan until I had settled with / De Bruyn (who carried out chiaroscuro paintings, since gone) which after some difficulty I have this moment / done, his charges of £25:4s & £3.5.8 are in my opinion / extremely unreasonable & such as he was not intitled to / I therefore paid him £20- & took his receipt in full of / all & every demand on you, which I hope will meet your / approbation - // I have reduced this plan so as not to exceed the / weight allowed for a common Letter, & whatever else occurs / shall be sent by the Coach - // I hope you will never find me wanting in attention, but / studious to have the good opinion of my Employers / I am Sir / Your obliged & obed[ien]t Serv[an]t // J Soane / Margaret Street / Jan: 3 : 1785

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
