Purpose

Working drawing, as executed, for the ground floor windows, 23 January 1789 (1)

Notes

The drawing was made by McDonnell, now in his fourth year of pupilage. His dimensions have been crossed out and amended by Soane so that, for example, 2 feet 3 11/16 inches become 2 feet 3 1/16 inches. The three-part window opens vertically by means of three sash windows; their form is that of a modified Wyatt window with a semicircular rather than a segmental blind arch (see drawing 4 for a plainer version). The form of the window each side of the entrance door hardly differs from the door that is a two-leaf, glazed casement window (French window). Unusual, perhaps, to have a transparent, undefended door on the main front of a house. However, the effect of these three similar, generous-sized openings is very successful, conveying an impression of open-hearted welcome.

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
