Aspect

Elevation of a two-storey, three-bay building with a pyramidal thatched roof, which supports a chimney in the form of a rustic brick arch. At the ground-storey level there is a central entrance, set within a Doricaedicula ornamented with a frieze of swags. At the first-storey level there are half-height windows, and the central window is set beneath an eave. The right-hand bay contains a ground-storey apse, with a half-height window above, and this is flanked by giant, fluted, Corinthian columns, which support a frieze of swags and a plinth. On the left-hand side of the principal building there is a single-storey, three-bay block, with a thatched roof and a semi-circular-headed entrance in the left-hand facade. The principal front contains a half-height window, with a frieze of swags and a figurative panel above. On the right-hand side of the principal building there is a one-and-a-half-storey block, with a central entrance flanked by windows, with quarter-height windows in the upper register, and all this is set within relieving arches

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
