Notes

Soane does not produce much work for Holy Trinity during 1823, which became a major issue the following year. Nonetheless, he revisited a drawing from 1820 (SM 15/2/8) and had a reverse perspective produced, this time looking back towards the organ gallery and main door. The layout is identical with the arcade of arches with stone balustrade. The ceiling is again barrel vaulted with the windows set high letting the light fall obliquely across the space, supplemented by smaller versions with descending inner sills at gallery level, and square windows at nave level. Even the pairs of parallel lines along the ground are identical. The major difference looking towards the other end is the arcade of arches which form the organ gallery, and vestibule behind. The same impression of an impressive one-point perspective is maintained. Nevertheless, it may reveal that Soane favoured this method of lighting the interior, and a clerestory level of this magnitude was still required.

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
