This early twentieth century cooking range was purchased in 1902, replacing a 'new open range with water boiler' that had replaced the original Soane range in 1875-76: a modernisation for the benefit of the resident Porter, whose family lived in the basement kitchen area and used the range to cook their meals and heat water. This arrangement lasted until after the Second World War when the kitchen was found to be overrun with cockroaches and was condemned as unfit for a family to live in. The Porter was then given a flat on the top floor ending the tradition that the Museum's Curator [Director] lived at the top of the building.
Eagle ranges were manufactured in Aston Cross, Birmingham, but the Eagle Range Gas Stove Company Limited had premises at 127 Regent Street, hence the 'Regent Street London' mark on the canopy (right hand side) on this range. The blue and white tiles are probably contemporary with the range.
Please note that the image of the range attached shows a fender in the foreground that has no association with it.
