Curatorial note
With rectangular bases and square tops, each with four ionic columns. One of a pair with XF376.
These stands are first shown in a view of Soane’s Lower Office at 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields of c.1818, where they are shown supporting two marble cinerary vases.1 By around 1825 they were installed in their present positions displaying the pair of important antique statues that remain on them today – a marble Aesculapius (M603) and the Ephesian Diana (M613). They are marbled en suite with adjacent shelving and plain square plinths for marble fragments and it is probable that this decorative scheme dates from their installation in their current positions. It is possible that the columns are reused from elsewhere as they have curious metal fittings on the backs, the purpose of which is unclear. These stands do not appear in the 1837 Furniture and Fittings inventory.
