A marble Roman sculptured vase with lid and pedestal
Browse
Curatorial note
This piece is an ovoid shaped vase to which a turned lid and pedestal have been attached.1 It is probably a piece of decorative sculpted ornament from a villa or garden scheme.
1 Vermeule incorrectly noted that this vase was solid: it is hollow. His statement that a turned lid and pedestal have been 'attached' to it is ambiguous: the lid is separate and perhaps he means that these are post-Roman additions to the object.
