For many years this piece was considered to be the original plaster model by Banks for the finished marble now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. However, when it was taken down for an exhibition in 2005 a stamped inscription was found on the verso confirming that it is in fact not a preparatory model but an early cast.
In 2015 this relief was reinstated in its original position in the recreated Tivoli Recess as part of Phase 2 of Opening up the Soane.
