Edward Hodges Baily RA (1788 - 1867), sculptor

Plaster

Museum number: SC19

Not on display

Curatorial note

This sculpture was displayed on the windowsill of the North Drawing Room and was badly damaged by bomb blast in WWII. Its head is lost. It is kept carefully in store in its damaged state.

The AB inventory entry for this work (1837) provides a rare glimpse into the creation of such a model: Small model by E.H. Baily R.A. Adam outstreched on the Cold Ground, modelled from Strowger in the Royal Academy. - the figure was set by Henry Howard. Plaster.

The subject is from Milton, Paradise Lost, Book 10. Baily had to find a model for the figure of Adam and it appears from the inventory that it was Samuel Strowger, who was a Schools model at the RA. He was also head porter of the RA following the retirement of John Withers (20 November 1802). He was still working at the RA in 1819 and died in 1827. It appears that Henry Howard, the painter, 'set' e.g. arranged, the pose.
