Repoussé plaquette with the bust in rather high relief against a stippled background. The Protector, looking half-right, wears armour, with a Gorgon’s head under the loose collar and a cloak thrown over the left shoulder. At the top of the Plaquette is a pierced lug for fixing.
The plaquette does not correspond exactly with any known portrait of Cromwell, but the ”wart” over the right eye is common to all the portraits and makes the identification convincing. The general pose and the design of the armour are reminiscent of the bust by Edward Pierce, Junior (terracotta squeeze in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery.
