This architectural composition depicts the interior of a sepulchral chamber with a large basin centre left and niches at high leve containing cinerary urns and vases. A group of figures centre right carry a body wrapped in a shroud while other small figures are shown lower left and on the steps to the right.
Professor Thomas McCormick (correspondence at Sir John Soane's Museum) has pointed out that a drawing by Clerisseau and almost an exact copy of this one, even to the figures, a very unusual thing, was sold at Sotheby's, June 15, 1983, no. 104. Another version with different figures and details was at that time in a private collection in London.
The collection also contains a copy of this drawing SM 26/5/12 drawn by Soane's Office as an RA Lecture Drawing to illustrate a tomb.
