St.Michael Overcoming Satan
Engraving
Museum number: P438
Not on display
Engraving of Flaxman's marble sculpture of 'St.Michael Overcoming Satan' which was exhibited at the RA in 1822. The marble was commissioned by Lord Egremont for Petworth House in Sussex, where it remains today. Soane acquired a small plaster model for the sculpture, painted black in imitation of bronze, which is at the foot of the main staircase of his Museum.
This print must date from some time between 1822 and Soane's death in 1837. It appears to be an early (unique?) state of an engraving made by William Roffe which was eventually published in the Art Journal in 1849 (with the figure shown in a niche - example in the British Museum Prints and Drawings collection).
