The work is dated 1829-30. It may have been completed by the time the frame was paid for in March 1830.
Commissioned by Soane in 1829. Soane commissioned this work after rejecting J.M.W. Turner's Forum Romanum for Mr. Soane's Museum which is now in the Tate.
