Frame made for JMW Turner The Refectory at Kirkstall Abbey in 1882

1882

Gilt timber frame, glazed

Museum number: P312.B

Not on display

Curatorial note

Turner's watercolour of Kirkstall Abbey does not retain its original close frame: it was reframed in 1882 after Soane's death in this shallower and narrower frame, with a window-mount (considered appropriate for a watercolour). This would have been necessary to enable the picture to be hung within the planes in the Picture Room, on the west side where it remained until it was taken down in 2012 when the orignal 1837 hang was reinstated in the Picture Room. This frame is the 1882 frame removed from the work as part of the restoration of the Morning Room in 2014-15 when a new frame, replicating the original in so far as is possible from views and record drawings, was made by Joseph McCarthy Frames of Tunbridge Wells [that frame is SM P312.B].
