Sir John Soane RA (1753 - 1837)
Narrow Soane frame to elevation of the entablature and capital of the order of the Temple of Vesta, Tivoli
Pen and indian ink
Museum number: P279.A
Not on display
In the AB inventory drawn up in 1837 P279 is described as having a 'gilt frame and glass'.
In September 2024, analysis was done on the frames for this and P283 which have an a-typical, orange-coloured finish, and it was thought this might be silver leaf with shellac varnish. However, the analysis did not show the presence of silver and it seems that this surface is some kind of later treatment (could it be 'Bessemer's Gold' or one of the other gold paint preparations recorded as being used at the Museum). Clare Kooy-Lister did a cleaning test which demonstrated that it could be removed, revealing beautiful gold leaf underneath. The course of treatment is to be confirmed as at 28/10/24.
