Una delivering the Red Cross Knight from the Cave of Despair, from Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene, Book 1, Canto 9, 8-35.
Commissioned by Soane from the artist (according to Gage, 1980, the commission dated back to as early 1824) and completed and paid for in 1830. The picture was painted in Rome: Soane paid Eastlake for the frame and for 'carriage of picture from Rome' on 11 August 1830. Exhibited Royal Academy 1830, no. 99.
