Curatorial note

This small drawing is one of three by Stothard (SM P238-240) framed together in a single frame and hung in the South Drawing Room at Lincoln's Inn Fields. It depicts a scene from the novel Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes de Saavedra (1547 (assumed)–1616), the greatest novel of the Spanish Golden Age. Soane owned several copies of the work in French and English translation but none illustrated by Stothard.
