Engraved by Giovanni Vendramini from the drawing of Beechey's portrait by William Evans.
Sir Francis Bourgeois was left in England when his father went to Switzerland after his mother's death and came into the care of Noel Desenfans, one of Soane's fellow Royal Academicians, and lived with Desenfans and his wife in Charlotte Street. When Desenfans died in 1807, Bourgeois commissioned Soane to build a mausoleum for him in Charlotte Street, with the intention that it should receive the remains of both Mrs Desenfans and Bourgeois himself in time. After just a few years, Bourgeois commissioned Soane to build a new Gallery to house Desenfans' picture collection at Dulwich, where the mausoleum was reconstructed and still forms part of the Dulwich Picture Gallery today.
