Curatorial note

A copy after 'La Vierge aux Saints' (the Carondelet Madonna), an altar piece in Besancon Cathedral (1512). There are a number of copies in existence and this one cannot be precisely dated. It is probably later than the 1570s but before 1674 because it shows a figure of Mary Magdalen which was painted over the portrait of the donor, Ferry Carondelet, in the 1570s but removed c.1674.

Provenance help-art-provenance

The painting was acquired in or before 1804 when Soane paid (18 May 1804) for having a 'picture on copper, sacred history' cleaned.
