Provenance help-art-provenance

Purchased by Soane at Christie's 17 January 1800, Lot 81 in the sale of a Collection of Cabinet Pictures lately consigned from the Continent also a small collection of capital pictures the property of a Gentleman of Fashion..... Zuccarelli. A landscape with Italian peasants, a pleasing and elegant composition. Lot 81 is endorsed Soane £15.4.6. The 1840 inventory of paintings in the Soane collection says that this picture was formerly in the collection of William Beckford (1759-1844), whose vast collection at Fonthill was acquired with wealth generated by sugar produced by the enslaved people working on his Caribbean sugar plantations. The sale catalogue of 1800 (Soane Archive) has the name 'Foxhall' recorded alongside Soane's name as the buyer. It is possible that this records Edward Foxhall acting as agent for one of William Beckford senior's pictures being sold through him.
