Curatorial note
In 1819 the Trustees of Lincoln's Inn Fields paid the Gas Light and Coke Company for four large gas lamps with square lanterns on the north and south sides of the square (the firm also supplied Soane's gas). Previously the square had been lit wtih oil lamps but by 1824 all those remaining had been replaced by gas. Four of the obelisk bases for these older oil lamps were saved by Soane. Two can be seen in the Monk's Yard, at high level outside the Dressing Room window (of whcih this is one) and two in the Basement West Corridor.
Drawing SM 74/4/1 shows one of these obelisks in use as an oil lamp in Lincoln's Inn Fields.
