John Charles Felix Rossi RA (1762 - 1839), sculptor

Model for a group depicting a man defending a woman from a lion

Grey clay, clearly two pieces (central join visible), mounted on a slate base

Height: 25.4cm
Width: 30.5cm

Museum number: MRR12

Not on display

Curatorial note

This must be the model exhibited by the sculptor at the RA in 1819 under the title “An escape; as a sketch for a groupe”. It is included in the catalogue of an auction sale of Rossi’s sculpture held by George Robins on March 3 & 4, 1835 (Soane: Sale Catalogues 23.13), the animals there being described as “a Tiger and a Boa”. Soane, no doubt, acquired the model at this sale. This lively clay sketch-model was acquired at around the time of the completion of Soane's Model Room and was displayed there, in the Model Room Recess, beneath models by Flaxman.
