Curatorial note

This is one of a group of 12 Peruvian vases acquired by Soane in mid-1834 and said to have been collected by James Paroissien (1784-1827).

Nine of them, including this one, belong to the Chimu culture from about AD900 to c.1470 (when they were overun by the Incas) dating from the late period of the Chimu.

Literature

Hilda Clark, 'Historical Note: James Paroissien 1784-1827 Surgeon-General to the army of the Andes', British Medical Bulletin, Volume 7, Issue 4, 1951, p.345. This does not mention the Soane vases but provides a summary of Paroissien's involvement with South America.
