Curatorial note
Cast of a Roman relief found near Palestrina in 1788 and now in the Vatican Museums (Vatican Museums no.489).
An exquisite student drawing of this cast dated 1818 illustrates the original lighter coloration (Vol. 83/20). The drawing includes the frame so the cast shown can be securely identified as this one rather than the other example in the collection, M1248, which is not framed.
This work features in our online exhibition Queer Revelations: https://www.soane.org/exhibitions/queer-revelations
