Curatorial note

Enriched on alternate sides with delicately carved vine and olive branches amongst which on the front face is a single small bird.

Comparable with similarly ornamented square pillar-shafts in the Vatican Museums, such as the one discussed under the previous catalogue number, Soane M30 (Vermeule 139) and in this case also particularly its pendant Vatican D4671.

Two other fragments Soane M727 and M481 have similar decoration and are thought to be from Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli (Villa Adriana).
