A fragment of a petrified tree

Museum number: M562

Not on display

Curatorial note

A section of fossilised tree trunk or branch on a stone base.

This was in Soane's collection by 1825 when it is shown in a watercolour view of the Colonnade SM Vol. 82, 100, dated July 29 1825. The 1835 Description of the Colonnade also describes it in that area: Between the southern columns on the left is a large and interesting petrifaction. Its inventory number indicates that it was probably still displayed there at the time of Soane's death.

Associated items

Vol 82/100, watercolour showing this item in situ
