Curatorial note
Although this has for many years been displayed as if a deliberate memento mori (reminder of death) on the table in the Monk's Parlour, it was not in this position at the time of Soane's death but was displayed elsewhere in the basement, in Soane's Catacombs, alongside a Roman cinerary urn. It was restored to that position as part of Phase 3 of OUTS.
