Curatorial note

The original Roman relief of which this is a cast dates from the first century BC (Rome, Villa Albani inv. 1014): its provenance is unknown. For other, partial, casts of the same relief see Soane Museum M791 and M825.

This cast is shown in a watercolour capriccio of works in Soane's collection, c.1825, Vol. 82_86.

Casts of this celebrated relief are found in many European collections (see Zahle, p.178).
