Curatorial note
The cast is from the tomb of Bishop Giovanni Ortega Gomiel of Burgos, who worked as a paper official for Pope Alexander IV and died in 1514. The tomb is attributed to the sculptor Andrea Bregno (1418-1503): it was originally in the main church but is now in the Sacristry.
Soane owned two casts (SM A32 and SM M1453) taken from the pair of identical panels below the paired pilasters framing the effigy of the bishop in this elaborate wall tomb. It is not certain whether both are taken from the same panel and their exact provenance and date is unknown. Both casts have a narrow integral frame but M1453 is then set in a timber frame, matching others in the Drawing Office.
The Royal Academy collection contains another cast of one of the same pair of panels, from the collection of Soane's friend the artist Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA (RA object number 04/2836), purchased in 1830 and like the Soane examples dated to the late 18th or early 19th century.
