Within top and bottom plain-fillet mouldings (the top set at a rising angle from left to right) which are joined by a supporting torch at the left corner, a Grecian Sphinx sits right, left forepaw raised toward a tripod and/or candelabrum, the left leg of which is just visible at the lower right corner.
This piece may be shown in a watercolour view of the Museum by J.M. Gandy, 1811, SM P384, lower right [Vermeule identified it but it is odd that the torch at the left end is not shown]
