Curatorial note
Soane believed that this was a cast after the antique but it appears to be in fact a cast of a Renaissance, 16th century, probably silver, Italian salver (see SM A20 for another cast from the same original). The location of the original is unknown, although one of Soane's two casts of it was made in Rome in
Although the provenance of the original is unknown this cast was made c.1820 in Rome.
There is a pencil note by the first post-war Curator, John Summerson, in the Spiers’ inventory 1906 (facing p.57) ‘Damaged while removing paint July 1947’. This explains the much eroded surface of this plaster.
