Curatorial note

The carved enrichment consists (from top to bottom as originally designed) of ogee base moulding with alternately varied honeysuckle detail, cavetto with fluting, and torus moulding with guilloche.

A section of the base moulding of an altar (?) or skirting of a wall, of beautiful detailed Augustan work, comparable with the Ara Pacis, Rome (as on, for example, the base of the podium1 ).
