English, unknown maker, c. 1825-30, mahogany. One of a pair with L97.A. With three sturdy cabriole legs with inset triangular cartouches on the knees.
These stands must have been commissioned by Soane for the pair of eighteenth-century Chinese vases (L97 and L103). The vases are shown without the stands in a watercolour of August 1825 on display on the north side of the Monk’s Parlour. By 1829-30 they had been moved to the north window sill of the Dining Room and were displayed on these purpose-designed stands. It may be that the use of cabriole legs is a deliberate echo of early eighteenth century style to match the date of the vases; the decoration on the cartouches on the knees lends a touch of Orientalism to the design.
