Curatorial note

This relief depicts Aeneas carrying his aged father Anchises away from the burning City of Troy, sacked by the Greeks, in a famous episode during the Trojan Wars described vividly by the Roman poet Virgil in his Aeneid book 2. Aeneas’ young son Ascanius is shown clinging to his father’s tunic.

This roundel is within a bead moulding added by Soane. Other versions of this sculpture are framed in different ways. The version at the Foundling Museum (FM297) is cast with a dish-like frame incorporated and painted in imitation of bronze.
