There is no surviving evidence for the execution of this design of a ceiling for the drawing room at Wormleybury. King notes Adam’s reuse of the design for a proposed ceiling for the third drawing room at Cumberland House (SM Adam volume 14/99). The Cumberland House design, dating to c1780, has slight variations, with the inclusion of apses and with the narrow compartments containing roundels replaced with naval trophies. Evidence for Adam’s reuse of a ceiling design is rare, and King suggests that the design’s notable quality accounts for this exception.
