The drawing shows a railed, double-gate hung from railed gateposts, both with lozenge and disc decoration. Flanking, stone gate piers each have an Ionic aedicule containing a tall vase on a cylindrical, strigilated pedestal. Crowning the piers, couchant lions face each other.

It is assumed that the gate was not built to this design. The early drawings (1-12) are dated 1785, there followed a hiatus until 1792-3 when a fresh start was made. The existing Lion Gate (photograph, 2004, SM information file) consists of a pair of rusticated piers each crowned by a Coade stone couchant lion. Either side are lodges possibly designed by Joseph Bonomi (1739-1808) c. 1802 (J. Newman, p.473)
