Design for a ceiling possibly for a room on the first floor, 1759 (1)

According to Bolton's inscription ('B') on this drawing the design was intended for Mrs Boscawen's ground floor dressing room, adjacent to the vestibule on the west front. However, according to the scale bar the dimensions of the room are 21.5 feet square, and it would have been very small for the dressing room which in Leadbetter's plan (drawing 1) measures 24.3 feet square. These discrepancies in scale may be the result of changes or inaccuracies in Leadbetter's plan, but this ceiling design is also very unlike the other drawing for the same ceiling (drawing 13).

According to Nairn and Pevsner there are and were a few more Adam ceilings on the first floor, and as this ceiling design does not fit any of the rooms on the ground floor, it may be a design for one of them.
