The withdrawing room was located on the first floor, at the centre on the south front, immediately above the great dining room. From observation of Leadbetter's plan it is apparent that this room in the upper register took the same shape as the great dining room below. Sadly, it was divided into two rooms by Bonomi in 1797, and at this time the original Adam ceiling was lost.

It is presumed that Adam's original ceiling was executed in accordance with this design as its iconography related sequentially with the surviving adjoining rooms on the first floor, just as the ceiling in the great dining room below (for which there is no extant drawing) resonated with that in the adjoining library (drawing 7).
