Library

A report by Purcell Miller Tritton, architects, was prepared for Stowe in 2008, A copy is kept in the Green Box files at the Soane Museum (pages 38-41 with photographs). Regarding the initial designs, the report suggests that 'although these were preliminary ideas and there were to be alterations, the basic framework for the library and ceiling was shown in the second perspective [drawing 2].

Lincolns Inn Fields March 15^th 1805

Henry Hake Seward (1778-1848, pupil and assistant May 1794 - September 1808) and Charles Malton (1788-?, pupil February 1802 - December 1809).

The entry in the Soane office Day Book for 15 March 1805 has ' About drawings of / Saxon Room at Stowe'. Nowadays Saxon or Anglo-Saxon is generally thought of as the period from AD 410 (the retreat of the Romans) and the Norman Conquest of 1066. Gothic succeeded Norman architecture.

The office Day Book for 19 March 1805 gives Storace and Malton as working on drawings for Stowe. That is, Brinsley John Storace (pupil April 1804 - February 1807) and (Charles Malton (1788-?, pupil February 1802 - December 1809)
