Designs for a fountain, 1779, executed with minor alterations (2)

Adam’s design for a pond with swan fountain was executed, and remains in situ on the east side of Mistley High Street. On the eastern side of the pond there is a lion mask from which water flows into a small basin below. This varies from Adam’s design as it is simpler in form, with the basin covered over by a brick arch. King suggests that the design also varies in the omission of the chain-linked baluster posts, which he doubts were ever executed. He also notes that to the south of the pond, on the west side of the High Street, there is a circular ‘feeder’ pond, which must also form part of Adam’s design.
