Variant designs for a carpet for the gallery, 1768, unexecuted until the 1970s (1)

This carpet design was not executed at Syon until the 1970s, albeit with a Vitruvian scroll rather than fret in the borders, and to a different colour scheme. The source for the design was a Roman mosaic pavement of the type found in the second and third centuries AD.

A very similar design was executed for the 6th Earl of Coventry for the drawing room at Coventry House on Piccadilly, and there are several drawings for this carpet (SM Adam volumes 8/105, 17/169, 18/57, and 49/53).
