Record drawing of a chair seat design, presumably for the dressing room, c1766 (1)

As the Chinoiserie dressing room was the only room at 23 Hill Street for which Adam is known to have produced designs, it is assumed here that this seat cover design was intended for that room. It is not known if seat covers were executed to this design, although Harris has noted that similar designs for needlework chair upholstery were produced by Adam for the Earl of Shelburne at Lansdowne House, and Lord Chief Baron Orde at Queen Street, Edinburgh.

William Linnell had been employed by Elizabeth Montagu to provide furniture for 23 Hill Street from 1752. This included some black and gold japanned furniture for the dressing room which remains in the possession of Montagu's descendants.
