London: 43 Hill Street: alterations and additions for 1st Earl Fortescue, 1793-1795 (6)

Hugh Fortescue (1753-1841) was created Earl Fortescue in 1789. Soane carried out extensive alterations to one of his country seats, Castle Hill, Devon, 1786-c.1788 (q.v.). Hill Street, part of the Berkeley estate, was built from about 1745 onwards. No. 43 (? renumbered 23) was destroyed by enemy action in World War II.
