Drawing 49 for the first floor includes a circular dressing room (or boudoir or morning room) for Mrs Thornton and a generous-sized dressing room with swept corners for Mr Thornton. On drawing 50 Soane has erased some of the room labels and inserted 'Nurses' and 'Nursery' apartments. The large circular 'Lady's dressing room' of drawing 49 has gone and the bedroom that replaces it has a bow window to which Soane has adjusted the spacing of the windows.
In 'Design No. 3' (drawings 53-54) Soane omits the nursery apartments but these are re-instated on drawings 62-63. The room with the large bow to the south (drawings 49-52) has entirely gone so that there is an empty compartment with only the outline of an external wall. Later, what is to be a terrace that lights the stairs is moved to the north side see drawings 62-63.
Stephen Thornton married Mary Littledale in February 1793. The had nine children, eight of them sons.
