Record copy of design for a chimney-piece, 20 February 1790 (1)

The design for the chimney-piece, perhaps to be used for one or more bedrooms is unremarkable. The jambs are reeded and the frieze is fluted with three discs each within a square. In fact, the more interesting chimney-pieces are found in the drawing room, dining room and library. Dorothy Stroud (Sir John Soane architect, 1996, p.130) has suggested that that they were possibly purchased at the sale (that was followed by the demolition) of Sir Gregory Page's house Wricklemarsh at Blackheath in Kent. The house was designed in c.1724-7 by John James (c.1762-1746). Soane noted in his Journal for January 1787 that he had received £178.15s.0d from Mr Fellowes for purchases from that sale.
