Preliminary design for a candle stand and design for a candle stand and pier glass frame for the great drawing room (now the portico room), c1778 (2)

Known to have been executed in gilt wood, possibly by Sefferin Nelson, the candle stands are currently held in private collections. Harris notes particular similarities in design to a 2nd century AD Roman candelabrum from Sta Costanza, now in held in the Vatican museum.

Harris credits the execution of the Apsley House mirrors and girandoles to Sefferin Nelson, the carver and gilder appointed to execute Adam’s designs for Derby House. She notes a significant payment of £259 made to Nelson from Lord Bathurst’s account at Drummond’s, dating to 1779.
