Alternative preliminary designs, and designs for the chimneypiece for the gallery, 1774-1777 (7)

William Adam (junior) inscribed Adam volumes 22/199 and 22/200 as the 1st and 2nd designs respectively, but it is worth noting that Adam volume 22/200 uses the design from half of Adam volume 22/199, being more of an evolved version of the first design than an entirely new chimneypiece.

The executed chimneypiece, attributed to Peter Mathias Vangelder (c1742-1809) and Joseph Nollekens (1737-1823), follows the design of Adam volume 22/202, albeit with a different tablet, and is very similar to the caryatid chimneypiece at Croome Court. The caryatid chimneypiece was used with some frequency by Adam during the early years of his career, first at Hopetoun House (carved by Michael Rysbrack 1756-58) having been inspired by Isaac Ware's engraving of his caryatid chimneypiece at Chesterfield House in his Complete body of architecture (1756).

The Harewood caryatid chimneypiece was removed from the gallery to the dining room by Barry in the 1840s, but it was replaced in 1990 by the 7th Earl.

There is a presentation drawing of a chimneypiece very similar to Adam volume 22/199 belonging to the Harewood House Trust, and there is a drawing for the caryatid chimneypiece at Harewood included in John Harris's A catalogue of British drawings for architecture, decoration, sculpture and landscape gardening 1550-1900 in American collections, 1971, p. 6.
