Design for the library, as executed, 1761 (1)

The library was in the centre of the south-east (side) front, on the ground floor, between the drawing room and the dressing room. It was executed according to this design but was substantially altered by James Wyatt in 1775, with a different arrangement of bookcases, and alternative grotesque panels by Biagio Rebecca.

Adam's design shows bookcases in recesses on the chimney and side walls, and projecting from the piers on the window wall, an arrangement to be seen again at Kedleston. Grotesque panels became common in Adam's work, but the original examples executed here - in accordance with Adam volume 31/106 - are thought to be his earliest executed.
