Andrew Fletcher (1722-79) was the son of Andrew Fletcher, Lord Milton, from whom he inherited Saltoun Hall, East Lothian in 1766. He served as MP for Haddington Burghs in 1747-61 and Haddingtonshire in 1761-68, and was secretary to the Duke of Argyll in 1748-61. It is likely that this design for a small T-shaped gothic cottage was intended for the park at Saltoun, and can therefore be dated between Fletcher’s inheritance in 1766 and his death in 1779.

Bolton has suggested that the drawings for this cottage are in the hand of James Adam. The design is very close to one for Stuckerduff House (Adam volume 9/107); the principal difference being the omission of bartizans on each corner of Fletcher’s cottage. It is not thought to have been executed.
